Only DCR-certified panels qualify for PM Surya Ghar ₹78,000 subsidy — Non-DCR panels = ₹0 subsidy

DCR vs Non-DCR Solar Panels — What's the Difference?

Only DCR-certified panels qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy in 2026. Here's how to tell them apart, verify authenticity, and protect yourself from installers who substitute cheaper Non-DCR panels.

DCR vs Non-DCR — At a Glance

The single most important difference: DCR gets you ₹78,000 back from the government. Non-DCR gets you nothing.

Net Cost Comparison — DCR Always Wins for Homes

Even though DCR panels cost 10–15% more per watt, the ₹78,000 subsidy makes them cheaper overall for all typical residential system sizes.

System Size DCR Gross Cost Subsidy DCR Net Cost ✓ Non-DCR Net Cost You Save With DCR
1 kW Small home · 2–3 rooms ₹68,000 −₹30,000 ₹38,000 ₹57,000 ₹19,000
2 kW 3–4 BHK home ₹1,24,000 −₹60,000 ₹64,000 ₹1,04,000 ₹40,000
3 kW Large home · max subsidy ₹1,80,000 −₹78,000 ₹1,02,000 ₹1,55,000 ₹53,000 🏆
5 kW Bungalow / large villa ₹2,75,000 −₹78,000 ₹1,97,000 ₹2,37,000 ₹40,000
10 kW Shop / office / large commercial ₹5,50,000 −₹78,000 ₹4,72,000 ₹4,75,000 ₹3,000

Above 10 kW, the subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 regardless of system size, so the DCR advantage narrows for very large systems. For all typical residential (1–10 kW) installations, DCR is cheaper net of subsidy.

Before You Sign

How to Verify DCR Certification in 4 Steps

Always verify before the installer places an order. Once panels are on your roof, it's too late.

1
Check the DCR Tag / Sticker on the Panel
Every genuine DCR panel has an MNRE DCR sticker on the back — usually near the junction box. The sticker lists the manufacturer name, panel model, and a DCR certificate number.
Photograph the sticker on each panel during delivery. Ask your installer to do this before mounting.
2
Verify BIS Certification (IS 14286 / IEC 61215)
DCR panels must be BIS-certified under IS 14286, or international equivalents IEC 61215 / IEC 61730. The BIS logo and certification number should be clearly printed on the panel nameplate.
Ask for the BIS test report or the panel datasheet showing the certification number.
3
Check MNRE's Approved Manufacturer List
Visit mnre.gov.in and search for the manufacturer name in the MNRE DCR-approved list. Only panels from listed manufacturers qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy — the list is updated quarterly.
Top approved Indian brands: Waaree, TATA Power Solar, Adani Solar, Vikram Solar, Navitas, Goldi Solar.
4
Demand a DCR Certificate Per Invoice
Ask your installer to attach a DCR certificate matching the specific panel serial numbers on your invoice. The certificate is issued by the manufacturer and is traceable back to MNRE's approval database.
If the installer cannot produce this certificate, walk away. No legitimate DCR installer will hesitate.

Common DCR Scams to Watch Out For

These fraudulent practices are unfortunately common. Know them before you sign any agreement.

Panel Bait & Switch
Installer shows DCR panels in the quote but substitutes cheaper Non-DCR panels at the time of installation. Always check serial numbers at delivery against your invoice.
Fake DCR Stickers
Panels arrive with fabricated DCR stickers that don't match any MNRE-approved manufacturer. The certificate number won't be traceable on mnre.gov.in.
Can't Produce Certificate
Installer claims panels are DCR-certified but cannot provide the actual DCR certificate with panel model and serial numbers matching your installation.
Rebranded Imported Panels
Imported Chinese or Vietnamese panels are relabelled with Indian brand names and sold as DCR. The cells inside are still foreign-origin — not eligible for subsidy.
No Serial Numbers on Invoice
Installer provides a bundle quote that doesn't itemize panel model or serial numbers — making it impossible to verify or trace DCR certification post-installation.
"DCR Equivalent" Claims
Some installers say panels are "DCR quality" or "similar to DCR" — this is meaningless. Either a panel is on the MNRE approved list or it isn't. There is no grey area.
How to Protect Yourself — Checklist
  • Get panel model, manufacturer name, and serial numbers itemized in your written agreement
  • Request a copy of the DCR certificate before signing (not after installation)
  • Photograph the DCR sticker on each panel during delivery — before mounting
  • Verify manufacturer name on mnre.gov.in's DCR-approved list before agreeing
  • Ask for panel flash test reports — the DCR sticker should be visible in the photos
  • Never pay 100% upfront before panels are delivered and inspected

DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) panels are manufactured in India using Indian-origin solar cells and silicon wafers. Non-DCR panels are either imported or use imported cells. For PM Surya Ghar 2026, ONLY DCR panels qualify for the subsidy of ₹30,000 to ₹78,000. Non-DCR panels receive zero subsidy.
No. MNRE rules explicitly require DCR panels for all residential PM Surya Ghar installations. Using Non-DCR panels will cause your subsidy claim to be rejected during DISCOM inspection — even if the system is otherwise installed perfectly. The inspector will check the DCR certificate and panel serial numbers.
No — this is one of the biggest myths in the solar industry. Top Indian DCR manufacturers (Waaree, TATA Power Solar, Adani, Vikram Solar) match or exceed Tier-1 international quality standards. Indian-made Mono PERC and TOPCon panels regularly deliver 20–22% efficiency with 25-year linear performance warranties. They're also exported to Europe, USA and Australia.
DCR panels cost 10–15% more per watt upfront than imported Non-DCR panels. However, the PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000) more than compensates — for a 3 kW system, DCR works out ₹53,000 cheaper net of subsidy. For any residential system up to 10 kW, DCR is the financially correct choice.
DCR is mandatory only for subsidy-backed installations — primarily PM Surya Ghar residential projects and some state C&I schemes. Private commercial and industrial solar installations without subsidy can use any MNRE-approved panels, including imports. Vermson Energy recommends DCR panels for all projects for quality assurance and future-proofing.
Your subsidy claim will be rejected at DISCOM inspection. To protect yourself before installation: (1) get panel model and serial numbers in writing, (2) request the DCR certificate, (3) photograph each panel's DCR sticker at delivery. If an installer has already used Non-DCR panels, you have grounds to demand replacement or compensation under the Consumer Protection Act.
