Divide your monthly electricity consumption (units) by the average solar yield per kW in your region. In North India, 1 kW generates about 117 units/month (1,400/year). So if you consume 600 units/month, you need roughly a 5 kW system. Our calculator above does this automatically from your bill and city.
A 5 kW rooftop solar system costs approximately ₹3,35,000 before subsidies. After the PM Surya Ghar central subsidy of ₹78,000 and Ludhiana's ₹30,000 state subsidy, you pay around ₹2,27,000. Ludhiana residents also earn ₹3/unit (≤3 kW) or ₹2/unit (3–10 kW) under the Generation-Based Incentive for 5 years.
A 10 kW system produces approximately 1,167 units per month (14,000 units/year) in North India. This is enough to offset bills of ₹8,000–10,000/month for residential consumers, or around ₹10,000/month for commercial properties at ₹8.50/unit tariff.
The Ludhiana government pays solar owners per unit of electricity generated for 5 years from commissioning. Residential consumers with ≤3 kW systems get ₹3/unit; 3–10 kW systems get ₹2/unit. Commercial consumers get ₹1/unit. This is on top of net metering savings and subsidies.
Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026, all residential consumers get a flat ₹78,000 central subsidy. Some states offer additional subsidies — UP provides ₹30,000 extra. Commercial installations don't get subsidies but qualify for 40% accelerated depreciation (approx. 22% tax benefit). Vermson Energy handles all paperwork.
With current subsidies, most residential systems pay back in 3–5 years. After payback, you get essentially free electricity for 20+ years (panel warranty period). Higher bills mean faster payback — a ₹10,000/month bill typically sees payback in under 4 years.
